BIOGRAPHY

“Cannot just keep pretending it’s alright…”

Steeped in a time of profound uncertainty, dark indie-pop project New Spell announces their second single Uncertain Answer from forthcoming/eventual album Future for Now. With songs that were penned primarily during the past two years, this single provides a glimpse into the coming collection, full of stories about being human in a modern world that is frayed and fragile yet full of hope. Singer-songwriter Leanne Kelly’s perspectives here are uniquely informed by her background in psychotherapy, increasingly noting that concerns about our planetary future have entered the therapy room.

San Francisco Bay Area-based New Spell – which also features production by Max Savage and collaborations with longtime bandmate Jacob Frautschi – is known for lavish indie-pop that has garnered favorable comparisons to Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, and Chromatics. The project has gone through several incarnations since its inception in 2011, transitioning from an indie band format into its current sleek, electro-tinged edition. New Spell has maintained strong, melody-driven songwriting throughout, layering compositions with synth bass, glitchy passages, and a rich tapestry of vibey vintage and modern synth sounds.

In a stylistic shift from the gauzy airiness of their last single, New Spell imbues their latest track Uncertain Answer with indie alt-rock, electro, and industrial elements for a hard-hitting, almost frenetic anthem. Feverishly emotive vocals, distorted drums, and throbbing bass weave together an ever-evolving story that is at once unbridled and inspiring, anchoring the listener in twinkling sounds and memorable hooks. Written amidst cultural conversations around environmental justice and social ideals, the song captures the urgency of the current moment. With an upcoming election cycle that could shape the future of climate policy, the lyrics encourage maintaining hope and working toward change in order to forge a more sustainable world.
